I've been in contact with some magazines about shooting and submitting models for their publications. One of the magazines I've been in contact with is outside of the US (actually in the UK). They normally work with photographers and models in the UK so they have different sets of rules on how they pay their photographers. Since I'm in the US I would have different set up, finding my own models, etc.

The question i have is how much would you charge for a photo set of a model with a 1 year exclusivity on photos they accept?

I know you can go to Alamy or other stock sites and look these up, but there is a difference between using a stock photo and being a regular contributor.

Thank you,

Anthony

Would you be responsible for paying the models or will the UK mag pay for them? That will have an effect on what you're going to charge the magazine.

I would assume the cost of the model in what I charge the magazine.

I currently work with a lot of models on a stock basis. If the photo sells, they get a certain percentage of what I sell the photo for.

This magazine is not a large magazine, it is an online only magazine at this time. So I know their finances aren't high.

I may have a chance to work with a model soon ... about what percentage of the sale do you pay the model?

I currently have on my model releases that a model recievess 15% (20% if there's nudity).

Thanks -- that's in the ballpark of what I was considering. :-)

there's also a difference between being a contributor and being on assignment. most publications have assignment rates that typically pay more than stock rates (because they are commissioning something to be produced that they couldn't obtain elsewhere). what they pay contributors depends on a number of factors (ie, how well known is the contributor, how the contribution is going to be used, the availability of a similar contribution at a lower price, etc). depending on the situation, they'll probably pay more than what they'd pay a stock agency, and sometimes they'll pay more for a contribution than they'd pay for an assignment.

all the same, a stock calculator is a good place to start. second, you'll need to ask the individual publications what type of rates they normally pay and gauge from there.

another alternative would be to hire a uk-based agent...
