Well, i've been using my beautiful 50D for about nine months now and recently its been acting a little queerly.
No matter the lighting situation, my shutter button dosent fire a shot. I press down on it, camera focuses, but nothing happens. Sometimes if i hold it down long enough, it'll take one. Other times it works fine. Im so worried, should I send it out? |

| Pull the battery and put it back in, and make sure you have the latest firmware update. |

| Sounds like you need a new shutter release. As much as I like Canon, this seems to be a re-occurring problem with their dSLRs. Send it in. |

I do get excited about new firmware....
But anyways.. click the menu button, and go to the third menu from the right (its the wrench with the 3 dots). The bottom choice tells you your firmware version. The most recent is ver. 1.0.7
You can go here to get the new update //web.canon.jp/imaging/eosd/firm-e/eos50d/firmware.html
Make sure you read all the directions prior to trying to do the update so you do everything in order. I find it easiest to do using a card reader. Hope this fixes your problem! |

Questions:
When you say 'camera focuses' does it actually focus (the light is not blinking) or are you saying that because the lens 'moved'? Camera will not fire unless it actually thinks the frame is in focus when in AF.
Does it react the same if you are in manual focus?
Did you check/replace the little battery?
Have you tried different lenses?
Is there a chance you changed a setting or mode that is affecting the way you expect the camera to operate? (as in are you sure it is not set on timer delay?)
If the camera worked one day then didn't the next it is unlikely the firmware needs to be updated or that an update would fix it unless something else has changed in your hardware. Has something else changed in your hardware? It is always good to have the most recent firmware, yes. But your camera shouldn't stop working just because the manufacturer updated the firmware. How would your camera know?
