I was watching TV 5 min ago and saw a trailer for a TV show that featured some 30-40 of my shots! Weird seeing them on regular commercial time.

...uhhh... no actually, the Host is a friend of mine and I have not worked for her before, so I did it for free. I'll at least get my name in the credit list when the show aires....

ah, how does it go? "you have to speculate to accumulate" sounds like you will be getting some decent exposure!

At least it is someone you know using your pictures. I had several of my Aurora pictures downloaded from photosig.com and used by several TV stations from New York to Warsaw on their weather progams to show the recent sun spot activity. Nope, never got an email or any request at all to use them. Which is why I only upload highly compressed jpg's of less than 45kb now for public display.

...well as decent exposure as it will get for an icelandic TV station...

The show has aired and my name is in the credits for the whole season.

You can find color versions of a few of the shots here:

Well, I think you should take them to court for copyright infringement. This is very serious stuff.

I recall from back in my TV production days that news agencies were exempt from such copyright laws when doing news stories to some extent. I may be wrong, but this is definitely worth investigating. It hardly seems fair they reap their advertising dollar on your work.

sounds fishy...it seems that wouldn't hold up in court, i'd put my money on the photographer winning. if a tv station stole your work glacierwolf, you could probably confront them and they would be happier to settle out of court than get into a messy copyright lawsuit. even if you dont have the money for a lawyer, it never hurts to threaten, and you might get some profit from your stolen images too...and let the tv stations know that they can't just steal whatever they want without repercussions.

If a TV station thinks it's ok to use your work without asking you, why not pay them a visit and pick all the stuff in there that you think might come handy someday? 8-)

just tell some skinheads there's free beer at the tv station.
