Well, it worked well for my centered challenge, only the human element (ps) turned it from a 5.5+ into a 4.3

if you want to eat cow crap go ahead... i'll pass

i dont happen to have thousands of dollars to spend on top end lenses to have those bragging rights. so i have to work with what i have. i find in general that working with what you have and making it work leads to less ignorance when it comes to any given subject.

i have also gotten some decent shots printable at large sizes using that lense. i am also not arguing its the best lense in the world, but that for $100 is worth the money...

18-55mm is a cheap low quality lens. You'd wanna look at the 17-40mm lens.

Here are my initial shots with my new rebel and the kit lens. The macros came out the best, but I'm not completely satisfied. I hope its the lens, and not the camera or photograper.

It's most likely the lens. These are similar to the results I have gotten with my kit lens. My favorite lens this far is my Canon EF 50mm f/1.8. Very sharp and very nice contrast with this lens. Very inexpensive. Get it and try it, you will love it. Very light too.

My thoughts of the kit lens are that it is definitely a starter lens for the DR and a lens for those just starting out in DSLR photography to learn the camera with. It is a great lens for that. This is not a big deal because that is why that person should have purchased a DSLR anyway, to buy more lenses. If that's not the case they should have just purchased a fixed lens camera.

what were the lense settings for those shots?
as mentioned in this thread the lenses is a bit soft.
it's capable of sharper images than these though. i've had some tack sharp results from it.

I tend to use mine for landscapes, architecture, cityscapes, anything where I want the wide angle. I also use it as a walk-around lens when I'm abroad and don't pack my (fairly heavy) Sigma 28-70/2.8 EX. I'm certainly not saying the lens is excellent at any of these, but for the money it does a reasonable job for me.

so i dont think you'll get much feed back in that respect.

i am content with the lense - nothing special - but it can produce sharp shots under the right circumstances/ settings

Completely agree, with good light my kit lens has taken some really make the shot better, but it works for now..and can't beat it for a back up camera lens.

Look at the cost of this lens! Comparing it to a 17-40mm L lens isn't really a way of comparing it! For those who can't afford to go out and buy top glass this lens is a god send, even though you'll probably never use it once you get a decent lens! Try shooting with it at smaller apertures...it'll never be remarkable but useable!

I tried to use mine as a paperweight but the damn thing was so light all my papers blew away!

Okay, seriously... I think they put that kit lens in there so people can start taking pics right away. If you don't do a whole lot of wide angle stuff (& use it properly as others have said) it's good to have when you need it.
