This past week I had the opportunity to do a lot of exploring of waterways around Raleigh, NC and there is one small mystery. The friend that I was with shot this photo with my camera. We have showed it to several people but no one knows what it is. Is it some kind of freshwater jelly fish or sea cuccumber? Or does someone else know what this happens to be?

Looks like frogs' eggs? Bull frogs (I think)up here in central New York have similar "nests". |

Yeah they do look like frog/toad eggs, but then again the last time I've seen eggs were 11 years ago.

Well, yes. I remember my niece holding gobs of eggs in her hands and she had hardly disturbed the mass of eggs. Not much time to look myself but you could try Google Images for "frogs eggs". I think you'll get lots of similar items. |

for some reason we remember the weirdest things from school. i'm not really sure, but this reminded me of something i read about in prehistoric geology--so i looked it up, and i think it may be of the freshwater class of bryozoans. i also found this photo on the internet--looks pretty similar. |

Awesome link! ("The funiculus is the site of statoblast production and spermatogenesis.") Almost makes me miss Latin class!
I retract my frog guess--looks like Alecia's on the right track.
(Apparently, I didn't go to her school.) |

that looks very much like what he found. Like he said when he found them reminded him of 3 things, jelly fish, sea cuccumbers and canteloupe. That photo is very much like what we saw.
