How much skin smoothing do you find acceptable in a portrait?

Do you think the fashion magazines do too much? or do you agree with what the fashion/glamour industry does?

I at times seen some really nice photos from the glamour magazines, however if you see the before and after shots they look totally different.

Do you prefer your portraits to have little to no smoothing of the skin, or do you go all the way and make them glow with perfect skin?

Reasonably it needs a balance. On the one hand you dont want 'plastic' but on the other it is reasonable to help the model by removing any blemishes.

So for me a light touch is always preferable - or perhaps I should qualify that and say as light a touch as is possible :- )

In my opinion, there is no right or wrong, to much or to little when it comes to retuching. The answer is in the question "who's the client?" If the portrait is of the client who is private and not a model (example: the bride/groom, the mother/father, the individual wanting a photo), then that individual should call the shots. If the client is a magazine, retailer, etc., then that client still calls the shots, not the model. The photog. can/may make recommendation, suggestions, etc but it is still the client s/he works for and is paying the bills.
