hello friends. i recently submitted a photo of a lighthouse for the Band Names challenge and i was hoping someone could give me some hints on how to do a better job. I'm happy with my score, but i think i could've done better. i'm not talking about the title, btw ;)

In order to get the beam the way i wanted, i needed to shoot wide open at f/1.8 and boost the ISO up to 1600. obviously, that introduced a lot of noise, so i had to neatimage the crap out of it (probably a little too much). if it wasn't a basic challenge, i would've only used NI on the sky, but such is life. the only other things i did in post were fix the color balance, some curves, and some sharpening.

so, any tips? is it possible to create or exentuate the light in post (basic or advanced editing type stuff)? should i just buy a faster lens and a camera with better high iso performance? that's not really an option since i just picked up a 400mm f/5.6 L ;)

here's the pic in question:

i'll be your best friend if you can help me out

With Advanced Editing you could stack several matching images to control noise. You could also shoot a little earlier at night for more light (a proper exposure on a 40D at ISO1600 shouldn't be all that noisy). Otherwise, you might need a full frame camera to handle that.
