No complaints -- just really curious. The book title challenge was a strange challenge for me.
I had
15 4s and 9 3s
but I also had
22 7s and 15 8s
This is not a thread complaining about scores! I've been doing a study on seagulls for the past month or so, trying to catch them in flight--other than the typical soaring shot. I've come close to entering one of these shots for a number of challenges, but haven't. Finally entered one in Book Titles. This is the shot:
My question for you is this: if you voted a 3 or a 4 on this photo, was it because of the position/capture of the bird, the processing, or perhaps the book I chose? I'm curious because I find the non-standard seagull shots fascinating. Like I said, I've been playing around with them for awhile now.
So I'm just curious whether it was the shot itself, or if I did something to mess up an otherwise good shot (processing or book title)
If you voted on this one, I'd really appreciate some insight. Feel free to be blunt--I can take it :)

Well, I was one of your "22s" and can't give you a clue as to the low scores.
The facial expression and the lilt to the wings, and general lightness was the epitome to me
of the book.

Thanks sfalice!
I really am interested in the 3s and 4s though. I figure that 3s and 4s are perfectly valid, well though out votes. (I don't say the same about 1s and 2s :P ) I know when people give 3s and 4s there is definitely a reason and with so many, there's obviously something I'm missing. And I'd love to know what it is for future reference. Most likely it's because I'm not done with the seagulls yet. If it were any other picture, it really doesn't matter. But whenever I am at a loss of what to photograph recently, I go to the gulls.

Im in the Critique Club, but didnt pull this out from CC, but I will treat this as if I did anyway.
First, the shot is a good one, well exposed, well composed, and the seagull has a nice 'pose' to it. It could be a bit sharper, as it doesnt have the detail in the wings that high scoring images on DPC are known to have.
For me though, I voted this a 5. Mainly because of the subject itself. A seagull to me isnt very special, in fact, I find it an annoying bird, so even good photos of a seagull dont inspire much of a reaction out of me. Not sure if other voters felt the same way, but it explains my one vote anyway.
You are known for taking photos of birds as well, and this is not your first seagull shot. I find the following photo much better:
Overall though, 5.6 isnt a terrible score. You and I were very close in fact.
Brad
ETA that I posted the same as a comment on the photo.

thanks for the feedback. I know it's not a terrible score, and believe me--I'm not complaining--I'm curious. I'm exploring the gulls like I explored the bluebirds. I was just very curious what didn't work with the photograph, and the feedback is helping me understand a little better.
