Hello,

Yesterday I asked about equipment - today it is about getting customers.

How does a brand new studio photographer get "known" or get "paying clients"?

Do I photograph family and friends for free or very low prices to build a portfolio? Do they then go out and spread the word? Do I advertise on Craig's List for models and barter for service?

I simply can't imagine running an ad or posting on Craig's with a FULL price for a photographer who is just starting out. This doesn't seem like the way to get people to my door !

Any suggestions from the pros? How did you start?

Thanks,

Kenny

I'll be interested to hear these suggestions too.....

Not a pro, nor do I have a "clientele," but it seems reasonable to do some discounted shoots to build up a portfolio/website and then have them spread the word. Make sure to give them some extra business cards that their referrals could maybe use as a coupon??

Maybe a local church or community group would be interested in some photography? I shot a community theater production last year for a friend who was directing it and got lots of compliments about the shots....should have probably followed up on some of that! Could have got some paying headshots or other show shoots lined up.

there was a guy here a long time ago that was really active who documented how he started his studio. in the four and half years since he first wrote these post, he has been wildly successful. YMMV...

New Studio Part 1: Starting Out
New Studio Part 2: Organization
New Studio Part 3: Plotting a Course
New Studio Part 4: Financing
New Studio Part 5: Setting Up the Shop, Part 1

New Studio Part 7: Advertising
New Studio Part 8: Customer Service

i found these links on _eug's profile; if you haven't already, you might want to fave him. he's bookmarked a ton of great reference material.

i have stuff the may or may not be useful to you, as well, bookmarked on my profile...

good luck!

Ok, that's weird.
The links don't work in Skips original post, but they do when quoted in the next post.
