Any Comments on this tree photo that i took a while ago?

***still need to get me a different hosting site...gotta work on those funds for a membership here, lol*** anyway, its a quite a bit smashed because of the sizing on the site, but im mainly wondering about composition and what i could do to improve on shots like these.

Thanks!

It is a little dark....might be that it is small too see, but its neat specially the way it looks like it is coming out of the ground.
Neat too, to be a B&W

I think you may not have written quite what you mean here ;-)

Dani - very difficult to see given the mangling the shot's taken on that site's re-sizing (you can't re-size it yourself before uploading?)

Black and White photos of trees give you a few specific areas to play with/think about. Overall shape of the thing - I try to take the approach of looking for strong geometrical shapes in the composition - the texture of it, both of fine leaves and branches and the body of the tree, and the location. The tonal ranges of bark and leaves give quite a lot of room for experiment in conversion to black and white with the Channel Mixer, especially if you experiment with some negative values.

Here, in terms of pure shape, you have good movement through the frame, a good sense of the growth of the tree. The cirve of the main trunk, and the bifurcation of branches higher up is strong compositionally. I kind of wish you'd shot it horizontal, rather than sloping the horizon like that - would it not have emphasised that curve of its growth?

I think there is a compulsion to try to capture only the tree in shot, but were you to include more of its environment, from the brief edges we can see here, the other straighter-growing tress might help to emphasise the twisted-ness of this one ... that might involve waiting for more sympathetic light perhaps - but a lot of the skill inlnadscape photography is in a ridiculous level of patience and waiting around for the light. I know of a guy who returns over and over again to his chosen sites over a period of five years or more to get just one shot.

....

Thanks for the great advice. i see what you mean about shooting it horizontally, but it is in fact shot on a horizontal, the slope of the ground in the background gives the illusion that its not (which i know is very tough to see in this version). youre also right about it being terribly mangled by the compression...i think im going to try and reload it and mess with the size and repost.

im just learning PS and im only in the playing stage. i think i'll also try playing with that shot as far as some post editing goes.

youve also inspired me to go back and do a more extensive shoot of the park that i got this at. there are a lot of great photos to be taken there, i just didnt have time the day that i went.

Anyway, thank you again (tolovemoon too) for your comments. and i'll try that reposting thing to see if its any better.

The URL for the original seems to be broken, however even without comparison I would say the tree is still a little dark and the rest of the image just seems to blend too much, not enough contrast.
