hi. i am really interested in buying a A80 after reading a lot of reviews. but i have noticed that in any of the sample pics posted on websites i could not find a good example of a shallow DOF effect. is it possible on the A80 at all? some of the sample shots of Olympus 750 were beautiful and had that effect. i guess the 10X optical zoom being the reason here. but the camera is too bulky.
need help in choosing between the two models

Depth of field involves the aperature or F#. If you can manually adjust this, then you would be able to get depth of field.

If you are looking for a shallow depth of field then you are looking for a # like F2(Wide aperature).

Looks like the A80 has a range of f2.8-f8 which is a good range.

If you can get the attachments and a closeup lens, you can get shallow DOF. The A80 isn't that different than my G2.

Taken with the G2 and a closeup filter. Unedited, full frame. Raw file was converted and reduced and sharpened in Breezebrowser using normal conversion.

hi faidoi. well both the canon A80 and olympus 750 let you change the f#.
aperture range in both camera being F2.8 - F8.
and i know its possible with the olympus. was just wondering if canon A80 can do it too.

and nshapiro thanks for the pic. i know its possible in macro mode.heres a few links for olympus 750 pics.
just wanna know if the canon A80 can pull shots like these

Sure ,if you come close 5-10 inches from the subject :-) !
That camera has about 16 mm focal length and in order to get shallow dof you have to be very close to the subject with wide open aperture F3 or so...

actually DOF involves more than just the aperature...in digital cameras (especially the canon a30-80 series) it's somewhat difficult to achieve a super shallow DOF (< 2") especially with non-macro type shots. The biggest reason is actually tiny, specifically it has to do with the small image sensor size...a number of factors go into determining the DOF is such as focal length, aperature, but also the sensor size. Digital cameras, at least the consumer and prosumer models generally have a very small sensor size. The notable exceptions are the digital SLRs which are able to truly get a very shallow DOF at times with wide aperatures. Personally, I love the shallow DOF look too; especially for portraits, I started on the canon a40 and although it's a GREAT camera series it suffers in that one aspect of having a small sensor. Now you can make your DOF SHALLOWER, but just not to the degree that the SLRs can. To maximize the effect: use the maximum zoom with the smallest possible f-stop number and increase the distance between your subject and the background. You'll be able to take some nice pics that way. They also make filters that throw anything not in the center out of focus, but i never had any kind of success with them myself. One other possibility is to use the portrait mode on your cam (graphic of a head); which is designed to create that shallow DOF look. Good luck and enjoy...

Lighting will affect the depth of field also.
