I live close to New York City and next month they will be holding Fashion week. Everyone knows that fashion week is one of the biggest fashion events in the world. I, being the photographer that I am, would like to photograph a few days of the event. Anyone have an idea of how to get media credentials to cover an event like this? Newspapers may not be as interested in having someone cover these type of events. |

Generally to get media credentials you need to be a working photographer who is hired by someone to cover the event. They would then apply through the proper channels to get you credentials. When I go to cover something my editor takes care of all of that if its actually needed. Otherwise I have press credentials that get me to where I need to be. You will likely need to apply to whomever is handling the event.

Matt, Thanks for the info. I guess I should be more clear though. I'm interested in know, how as a freelancer would you start looking for media creditials to cover a fashion event. Like where would you start...local journals magazines, etc.
When looking to cover a sports event, a freelancer can go to local newspapers to get credentials, but for a fashion event? |

Same principal, you first have to find someone who is willing to hire you to do so. Most larger organizations aren't going to allow just anyone with a camera into a position to shoot that would take the place of a working pro. Contact local magazines or print agencies who might be looking for someone to cover the event.
If you want to just freelance it, you are going to have to submit to the agency by yourself to see if they will give you credentials.
When I freelance something that I'm not hired to do, I have to go through the process of filing paperwork with the correct agency to get credentials just as my editor would do. Find the agency who is hosting the event and contact them about getting credentials to shoot, most will ask who you are shooting for, what you will be covering and what access you will need.

MattO is right on the money with his advice.
Whether it's a sporting event, concert, or whatever... events that hand out credentials are doing so because they're willing to allow the event to be photographed for legitimate news outlets. They're going to be weary of people who just want to shoot for the sake of shooting.
They need to be assured that the photos are going to be used to promote their cause, and not showing up on t-shirts, mugs, etc., in a non-editorial way. And unless it's a really small, hometown sort of event, they're not going to be enthusiastic about giving credentials to someone who wants to use the shots in their portfolio, either. That's also non-editorial usage.

If you want to shoot it and can't get media credentials, why not try looking at it from the outside? I mean, go to where the events are, shoot the crowds outside, shoot the stuff happening in the alleyway, shoot the photogs staking out the place.
You may not get the typical fashion photos that every other photog around the runway will, but you might get something unique to you. |
