What we had hoped was a soft tissue injury is now a blown ACL in our Corgi's knee. She is three years old, and in wonderful shape---well, she needs to lose a few pounds ( working on that). The treatments seem to range from no surgery to major surgery. I'm reading a lot of different opinions and finding out that this a common injury among dogs ( of all breeds and sizes) and more surgery is done on dogs with this problem than with people having the same issue. Some articles call this injury a " cash cow" for vets! I was just wondering if anyone on here has experienced this issue with their dogs, and what did you do? |

I tore my ACL skiing. It hurt, but I walked on it the rest of the day because the g/f wanted to go shopping. I had surgery.

Get the excess weight off of her, keep her lean, and if she is still having problems, get the surgery. Being overweight is a significant cause of these injuries in dogs, and certainly won't help with her recuperation post surgery. Walking on a treadmill underwater is awesome for recovery, as is swimming. |

Sounds like good advice. Poor pup, I hope she improves quickly! How did she get hurt? |

My lab has had two ACL injuries (two knees) and both replaced. It worked well; without it she would not have had a good quality of life.
She's fine for it; she does limp a little after strenuous exercise (like a hike through our woods where she does a lot of swimming and running around), but in general she's better.
They replace it with something synthetic that they say can't tear again. So after two knees (the front) she's done because according to the vet, it won't happen to her back legs. Good thing, because surgery was expensive (about $1300 per leg!)
