I'm going to try to get something in for this challenge. I just built a DIY light table recently so I should be good to go. |

Haven't touched it again and now my SLR is out of action. I suppose I could try it with my S5. |

Well....I would if I could figure out how to coordinate my camera and flash unit.
Anyone with knowledge of Canon (450D) and Canon Speedlite 430?
I finally got the pair hooked up with a cord so they will synchronize with the flash
off-camera, and actually flashing. (NOT an easy task for this mechanically challenged individual)
but output so far consists of a series of totally black and totally white frames when aimed at a
potential waterdrop.

Hmmm, moving right along and pushing buttons as I go.
I dunno know what I did, but I'll take it as a first attempt:
#1
#2
#3
So they are maybe not works of art, but they aren't black or white frames!
Wonder what I did?

I don't know what you did, but I used manual mode and adjusted my setting until I got a good exposure. I had a 430 ex on camera, like yourself, and an optically triggered slave to the right. I had to work at 1/200 with my rebel XT, as that was the maximum flash sync speed. The rest was adjusting aperture and ISO to get the right exposure. |

Slight change in the Water Drop Challenge -- when you have your final shot ready, you can post it to this forum Water Drop Pictures for judging between now and midnight, August 31st (EST) (the same time your free study is due).
Good luck!! It sounds like Irene's all ready for us!
Thanks everyone!

Thanks, Yo_spiff for the settings hint. It helped.
My journey to the perfect water drop seems full of detours.
Trying for the object drop first, my first attempt with cherry tomatoes had some unexpected twists:
(cherry tomato or little fishie?)
(hey, I got three bubbles!)
(sometimes ya just gotta play)

My first attempts from last night.
I realised a few things
1) I need a bigger bowl
2) I need a to use a larger smaller aperture
3) I'll probably need to use both my flashes to backlight

When you view your picture, you'll see the image id in the web address. So the web address for your picture is:
//www.dpchallenge.com/image.php?IMAGE_ID=816483
so the image id is the number at the end: 816483
Click on the insert thumbnail link to site image button (the 2nd button from the right) and enter the image id.

Moving right along and several hundred shots and experiments later -
and while results are frustratingly random, the process is addicting -

Just a reminder everyone -- water drops are due on August 31st at Midnight.
DO NOT post them in this thread.
POST YOUR FINAL SHOT in the following thread: post your final water drop shots here
(did I use enough upper case there? Should I bold it as well?)
:)

LOL - I'm still in training so I'm still posting them here.
However, I hope this doesn't mean I cannot post one of the ones I put here in the "official" thread.
Here's today's crop. I'm getting better at moons over calderas, but the crown still eludes me.

Ok, I don't have a hot-shoe flash, but I have an old one from my film days that I'm playing around with. The fact that I can't have the camera run it--that I have to do it by hand, is getting very interesting!
So far only one shot has worked, but I think it's kinda fun!
Okay, now back to the drawing board!

Ok, he's still frowning at me...
Here's the rest of the shots
Now I just have to remember to pick one and get it entered before Monday at midnight. |

Can somebody draw up a diagram of a setup for this? These are fun, and I've always appreciated the number of frames you have to shoot to get "the one", but I wouldn't want to attempt it w/o a bit of instruction....
Plus, I don't have a great flash unit--just an SB 25. I do have a 60mm macro lens though... |
