I burned a brand new DVD and played it once. The next session it would not even load. Found this article:
//story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=562&e=18&u=/ap/disc_rot
This is a very interesting article on CDs and how they are not as "immortal" as once thought. I found a hole in a brand new DVD the size of a pea. If you are archiving your photos, you might want to make back ups of back ups.
Would appreciate any comments from the pros out there.
(I have been away for two weeks on vacation. So if this info has already been posted please delete it.) |

I guess the real solution is to let someone else store your data. It ain't any safer, but you can get paid if they foul it up.
Offsite, 100m above sea-level, and a weekly copy to a different continent (outside any major cities and also over 100m above sea-level) recommended. How paranoid do you want to get?

What would you reccomend for backup/archival? Gold-CDs? Are DVD +R good enough already? I want to make 2 copies of each CD, keep one at home and one off-site. Some people at dpreview.com have mentioned Fuji CDRs.
What do you do?

I'm sure some DVDs are considered archival quality (and cost more to go along with the quality) but if you're burning in duplicate or triplicate each time you do a full back up I think you can evade most quality problems.
The absolute biggest rule is to never buy off-brand media spindles for your photo archives. Always buy known brands, and only from the list of recommended media which should have accompanied your DVD writer. |
