Cheap microphone stands can work too ... I think I got one (mic stand and boom) at Guitar Center for $20 or so (maybe on sale).

If there's a construction site around, you might be able to pick up a scrap piece of BX cabling -- heavy-duty electrical wire with a kind of goose-neck-like metal shielding wrapped around it. Or pick up some cheap (broken?) office lamps at a garage sale, either goose-neck, or the kind which clamp to a counter and have a swing-arm.
