Many moons ago, we did a tribute challenge where DPCers were asked to take a photo in the style of a famous photographer. It was an inspiring and educational challenge, and of course was never done again. Why imitate some old fuddy-duddy when you can do an exact copy of a ribbon winner?
Well I'm not going to ask for a Tribute Challenge 2, because that would probably doom it from ever occurring, but the Username Challenge has given me an idea for a DPC Tribute Challenge.
Description: Take a photo in the style of a photographer on DPC. Do not merely recreate one of their photographs. Use that photographer's username in your title.

I think you are right post and I also think that this is a very good idea. Lets do it. |

This appeals to my discriminating joie de vie. |

Neat idea! But don't you think that if I could shoot in the style of pointandshoot/ jdannels/ bucket/insert a dozen more names here, I already would be doing that? :-) Heck, I don't even have a goat. But I think I may know where I can find one... |

I like the idea. Although it may work better if the phrase "in the style of" was somewhere in the title since tribute has become synonymous with copying.

Both suggestions should fly but if the Tribute 2 challenge is doomed, "In the Style of ..." would be fun. |

Could be fun. I'll need to choose someone that has a unique style, but one that would not be attempted by a dozen others in the challenge. |

It seems to me there would be a tendency for most people to choose to shoot "in the style of" ribbon-winners, and certainly to avoid those of us who might seem to lack a definable style (and don't score well) ... it just seems to me a bit at odds with Don's usual approach.
It might be interesting to do it like the earlier challenges (e.g. Ansel Adams) and to have the challenge specify a single DPCer to emulate ... but politically tricky to choose. |

Hmmm, if we used someone like rackat who hasn't been active on the site for years, but still is an incredibly outstanding artist that would probably take care of the political issues.

I think many would attempt to do a Posthumous style. Though I think he does not like the idea of having a definable style. I think I might walk around downtown with my camera on my hip, emulating bvy. |

Well, I could write "inhabit the spirit of" but somehow I don't think that would fly. :D

I like this idea for a challenge - in fact I suggested something like it in his thread:
In the style of... |

In my case, that might be a good thing....
No, wait! A challenge to shoot in my style, there ya go! (I probably couldn't win that one either.)

Isaac Asimov wrote a story called The Immortal Bard in which Shakespeare is brought into the future to take a college course on his own plays, which (of course) he flunks. |
