Everyone knows about sites like Facebook. [My daughters say I can't join because Facebook isn't for old people and they don't want me as their friend, i.e. no big brother :-)]
My family like most is getting more spread-out and communication is challenging. It got me thinking that there must be some "family" oriented networks available and sure enough I stumbled on several in an internet search. They allow you to build a family site, with family blogs, calendars, etc. Two of the ones I found are FamilyCrossings and Famiva.
Do any of you use these sites or one like them? Any recommendations?

Most of my family (at least the ones that know how to use a computer) are on Facebook. Including a few of the parents. |

I also use Facebook to keep up with my family. Parents, Aunts/Uncles, Cousins, etc. are on there.

Yup, the only reason I even considered using Facebook.

My Family.com
My cousin set up one of these a few years ago to keep in touch with all of her mother's family (my father's family). It's got a section for photos, news, calendar of events, family tree, chat, polls, etc. Only people with a password can get to it, making it private. |

I just joined FB last year (I'm 49) and I have a boat load of family members on there and we post events and photos to share...it is really a great tool...but I have some family members that are quite obstinate about joining (something about the information police...like they don't have your number already) I know that once they join it just makes it all the more fun...
I think I would be asking why my kids don't want me on their FB friends list...I am on both of my girls FB Friend lists and it is fun to see what their friends are up to as well... |

The no friend comment is tongue-in-cheek (mostly :-)). At 19 and 22 I'm not too concerned with looking over their shoulder any more. I've seen their activity and both are quite responsible.
Facebook is an option but some of these family sites look interesting as well. I was just curious if anybody was using them. |

Yes, I used to have an active account with them. You can assign levels of priviledges to each person (who can administer, post, or just view), and you can set it to send out automatic emails whenever someone posts new content.
I think they may be affiliated with one of the Mormon-backed geneology sites, but I'm not sure, and I never noticed anything "unusual" in the site itself.
I always thought of it being like a big bulletin board that the entire extended family can see. |

You could use FaceBook, but don't be insulted if your kids don't add you as their friend. I might be 25, I still don't want my mom to read my Facebook status when they go like
21h30 "Jean-Dominic is having a PAAAAAARTYY"
22h36 "Jean-Dominic LOVES that bailey's"
23h22 "Jean-Dominic just spotted a very sexy chick"
00h14 "Jean-Dominic real;y have truble typing on is IPof"
9h47 "Jean-Dominic is wondering why he woke up naked in his living room.... oh still some bailey's left"
9h52 "Jean-Dominic is wondering who's G-String this is"
ok, your kids may not behave as bad as me... but still it's not cool to have your parents on facebook
for more embarassing moments about parents on facebook: Oh crap my parents joined facebook |

A lot of my extended family is on FB. I like it that I can post embarrassing stuff on their walls for all of their friends to see. :-D
For close family, we use Calendar-sharing through Google Docs.

I use Facebook and I am sure my 16 17yo son hates me for it, but aside from that and the fact that somehow NathanW got on my friends list, it works excellent for keeping in touch with friends & family.
edit: I forgot my son just turned 17. I should really check out his FB page to keep up on these things.
