I have a Pentax Optio 550. It's my first digital camera. First of many I think. My question is a newbie one though. How can I get my camera to take photos faster or is this just the nature digital cameras? I have gone through the manual many times. I assume I am missing something.

Does your camera have a burst mode? Which takes pictures in quick succession while you keep the button pressed down.
Thats is what I use to capture action. Other wise my Canon A80 just does not have fast enough action and I find it to hard to "time" the capture.

Did some quick research and notice that the fastest setting is 1/1000 which is quite good to capture some action shots.

Look through your manual for shutter priorty and select 1/1000. Also prefocusing on a subject by pressing halfway on your shutter button should give a quicker response.

Also check for a sports mode if your camera has the feature.

I have a 555 - I think they're pretty much the same. The sports mode will take 3 photos in quick succession which I've found useful. I keep meaning to check the manual to see if I can get it to do more than 3 at once.

It does take pictures slowly. I've noticed that the higher megapixel autos do. I actually found my old Canon IXUS to be much faster.

(BTW, thanks Faidoi, I'm going to check the shutter speed on mine too)

I was just looking at the specs on this camera (jealous), time lapse mode is really cool and the 15 seconds exposures (great night shooting potential), 3D Stereo mode. 5.0 megapixels (drool). All you need is a tripod and you can take some really cool pictures.

Oooh, I didn't realise it did this. I'd better read my manual again. You've given me all sorts of ideas ...

One of the most fun bits of this camera is how easy it is to record voice. I have a couple of recordings of people talking to my camera and wondering what's going on :)

I'm curious if you've played with the sterogram mode or the soft focus mode. This camera is loaded with some cool effects. If done correctly this camera could rule the basic editing challenges.

I've played with the panoramic, which is excellent, but not much else yet. I'll have a play and post things if I get some good results.

Wow. Thanks for all the responses. Now I have a direction to go. I never thought of using the burst pictures. I spent a couple games trying to get my son pitching. I would always get him at the tail end of his pitch. GRRRRRR!

It is a good camera. The first picture I took with the camera is:

It was done in auto (read "NOOBIE") mode with no tripod with a hard wind going. It's obviously resized for the internet though. This camera is a good starter for me. It feels a bit like a toy, but is real compact. Battery life a real good.
