My sister in law came to visit and saw the pictures I took of her my brothers kids along with mine and her comment was "wow, what great pictures, I guess I need to get a better camera".. I just laughed..
The picture that really got her attn was a gorgeous shot of her boys with the sun barely peaking through the two of them, after I posed them, and shot it in a way that the sun rays were shining all around them.. I guess she thought all of that would be simply accomplished by paying more for a camera.. It didn't bother me but it bothered my mom.. Who jumped down her throat for saying something so rude.. She apologized cause she didn't "mean it that wayyyyy".. I knew she didn't, but I agree with Karmat.. It's just that she has no idea what she's talking about so when people do say that, I think great.. Go spend the $1500 and watch it then collect dust on your shelf because to me, having all of the great lenses and camera's will help, but only if you have some idea how to use it.. |

And your highest score is higher than my highest score. Does our assertion have credence yet?
I don't think anybody is saying it doesn't help, what everybody is saying is that the camera isn't everything. You can take crappy pictures equally well with anything, and you can take good pictures with anything too. Taking a nice photo is perhaps easier with a higher grade camera but you still need to have an eye for things or rely on blind luck. If you're relying on blind luck it doesn't matter what camera you're using in the first place. |

Until very recently, my highest scoring shot was taken with a compact, and there are still two non-SLR shots on my profile page. |

A little late to the party on this one, but just got my highest ever free study score. I used a point an shoot compact instead of my DSLR for the first time. Just goes to show that when I spend less time looking at my camera and more time at the surroundings I get better shots. Still would'nt swap the d700 for a point and shoot though! |

What I get a chuckle out of is when people say "I need a new camera, mine doesn't take good shots in the dark". To me that's like saying "I need a new car, mine doesn't run without gas". :)
As to the original discussion, tools don't make the craftsman and the gear doesn't make the photographer. |

I only got that compliment for pics from my most wonderful p&s, the FZ10. A LOT of truth in it too. Currently striving for the day when I get it for my DSLR. |

Typically, if anyone ever approaches me in public, I give them a roundhouse kick to the head before they are able to compliment me on my awesomeness.
BOOT TO THE HEAD !

Now that this thread has come close to reaching its appointed end - (and with the aside that I take MUCH better pictures with that awesome little newcomer accessory called Image Stabilization) - here is the most - er -
left-handed compliment I ever received, strong emphasis on the last word:
"I really like your concept?"
