A few weeks ago I asked your advice on whether to get my Olympus C-2100 (still under guarantee) repaired or accept the C-730 I was being offered as a replacement. After a lot of constructive advice I decided to keep my camera. Now, 5 weeks later, I've been informed that Olympus "can't" repair it.

I'm really not happy to take the C-730 as it doesn't have an image stabiliser. The dealer has suggested Canon's PowerShot Pro90 which, like my camera has a 10X zoom, but appears to be a discontinued model and is MUCH more expensive, so I would have to pay in almost as much as my camera cost. The only alternative I've come up with so far is the FujiFilm Finepix S602 which seems to have some interesting features (I'm still reading up about it) but only has a 6X zoom. I would have to pay in much less for that one.

Does anyone have any advice regarding either of these cameras, or knowledge of any other camera with a good zoom and an image stabiliser? I'm pretty fed up right now as I really liked my camera and am not keen to change it. But it seems I've got no choice, and I'm not keen to deal with Olympus again after this.

I forgot to mention one additional problem. I'm still running Windows 95, and have only just got a stiffy adapter to read SmartMedia without USB attatchments, so I'm pretty much stuck with SmartMedia unless I can find an old model that still runs on Windows 95, which the Canon seems to do.

gina, i have the canon and love it. not having used a camera w/o image stabilizer, i can't honestly tell you what difference it would make, but on the other hand, there are many images that i 'shouldn't' be able to get sharp, but do. so it must be helping a lot.

depending on what you want to do, here are some benefits: the zoom and i.s., obviously, but it also takes filters w/out the need of an adapter. it has a pretty nifty panorama mode that lets you line up photos more easily. i totally love the swivel LCD, it lets you try more unconventional angles of photography w/out you having to be an acrobat.

some drawbacks: effective 2.6 mp is not much compared to other cameras out there (although, that hasn't stopped me from printing 20x30 photos through daprints with decent results ... there are some tricks ... let me know if you need more help if you decide to go with the canon). slow compared to many new cameras (focus speed as well as shot-to-shot).
the focus ring takes a while to get used to, not as precise as a manual ring would be. but doable.

let me know if you have any more specific questions ...

I would have thought if the camera is under warranty that it's their responsibility to provide a camera which has all the features of your old one.

If the replacement of the same brand that they are offering doesnt have that and you therefore look at other makes, they should pay out the difference in cost, not you.

This is, of course, if it's under warranty.

Just my opinion, best to ask a lawyer but that's what I'd understand - Repair or Replace (with same or better).

:(

Bummer Gina - I feel for you.

I havent tried a camera with image stabilization so I really don't know how much it helps. I wish I could help but all I can offer is my sympathies...

Good luck!
