When someone says "iTunes is slow" what do they mean by that exactly? Starts up slow, takes too long to switch between songs, doesn't search the library quickly, the store is laggy? I'd really like to know what is slow about it for some users. iTunes runs great on both my mac and my pc. i never notice any latency or issues. i built my PC to be pretty beastly, but that was over 2 years ago and i haven't upgraded anything since. maybe i'm just lucky?

Virus protection could be an issue. A recent AVG update saw several of the iTunes dlls as a trojan and "cleaned" them.

With the update, AVG would recognize iTunes DLL files in Windows as infected with the "Small.BOG" Trojan virus. After the files were quarantined, iTunes would not run.

Ha! I always thought iTunes was little more than over-rated spyware - now I have proof! :-)

Yes, I-Tunes sucks!!! I bought a new computer, and wanted to install itunes and download some new songs, because I got a gift card for x-mas. Well.. if I install to my new computer... I lose most of my songs on my ipod, because I didn't buy them through I-tunes..and no longer have the cd's, or back-ups. After hours of frustration and cursing, and talking to support, I gave up.. deleted itunes, and now I have an mp3 player that I can't add songs to. What a waste of money.

Hey... Mac's aren't bad. They are great entry level computers. :)

You can always upgrade to a PC!

iTunes sucks because you didn't have your music backed up? i'm just poking a little fun, but seriously, that's not a software problem :P i make sure i back up all my music in at least 2 extra locations. it's too big of a pain to go back and import everything again.

i'm still waiting to hear what is so slow about iTunes. maybe i should just avoid threads such as these.

I find it unfair, since the songs are already on my I-pod... and if I sync with itunes on my new system it will delete all songs that were not purchased through itunes.. that's just lame, but I understand, because it keeps people from stealing music. but.. if you have the music already on your personal ipod.. that has it's own personal serial number.. then the software should be able to recognize that when I sign in to MY itunes account.. and not erase my WHOLE FREAKIN PLAYLIST!!!!

Edit: Let's think about it... How did the songs get on my ipod if they didn't originate from my library? what's the point of sync.. if it's not going to match what's on my ipod with what's on my computer. Clearly it should download the songs off my ipod..onto my new computer, using the same itunes account.

Entry level? "Apple literally owns the $1000+ computer market. 91% of the high-end and high-priced computing market is dominated by Apple." People don't generally pay extra unless the product is superior.

Smiley face dude... smiley face.

I'm not anti-Mac or Apple. I make my living on PC programming, but first started on an Apple II.

BTW, the reason I won't touch a mac is because of it's users. Too many are stuck up a-holes, that hate windows based PC because they are not technically inclined enough.

And if we are technically inclined enough to know better is it OK if we use a Mac? Just checking.

Safari is currently the only browser available.

If the Touch is anything like the iPhone (and I suspect they are), then there are multiple browsers you can download and install from the app store. Here are some replacement browsers for mobile Safari (in no particular order):

- iBrowse
- Oceanus
- Journey
- Perfect
- Incognito (for private browsing)
- Privately (for private browsing)
- VanillaSurf
- and tons more . . .

Thanks, I will have a look at the ap store today and check these out. Do you know of hand if any of these browsers will bypass mobile content and show the website as you would view it on a PC?

OK, re-read the original post my friend.

MS are not really threatened by Mac overall, their biggest headache is Linux. But Apple obviously want to win over a fair number of Windows users - hence the reason I cant understand why they release a completely substandard version of what is potentially their best known cross-platform application. Its not like Windows developers are thin on the ground, they could easily get some good devs in to optimise the code.

You see the point now?

i'm still waiting for a reply telling me how iTunes is so slow or awful on a PC. "it sucks" isn't good enough. on my PC, i start iTunes. within 3 seconds, it is open and my entire music library is available to play. it's organized perfectly, and very easily searched. upon double clicking a song, the music begins instantly. click the button to advance to the next track, and it plays the next song instantly. plug in my iPod or phone, and it recognizes it and is ready to sync. i really don't see what the problem is. all this can happen with multiple applications running, such as Firefox and Picasa.

could someone please tell me in similar terms how it acts on their PC? i have a feeling that it's not the iTunes software or by some miracle i have just the right configuration that it just so happens to run perfectly fine for me.

my system: Windows XP Pro SP3, Intel Core 2 6600 @ 2.4GHz, 2GB RAM
iTunes v8.2.1.6

iTunes is a pig on resources. And while it has a generally nice interface, it's pretty stupid in many ways. If you let it manage your collection, you get the weirdest folder breakdown for show music, which is most of my son's collection. My kids just gave up on it too--besides the heavy on resources part, my son didn't like that it doesn't scan for music automatically.

We use XMPlay. It has a much more spartan interface, which takes some getting used to, but find a good skin for it, and it's downright elegant.

Very low memory use...I use the "windows Classic 2 Mini (red)", which sits at the bottom of my monitor like a tiny little toolbar, taking up almost no space. Right click on "List" and I get the library listing; left click gives me the current playlist. All the basic controls you need for playback and advance right there in a compact form. Very nice. (Though it doesn't RIP music or burn music like iTunes; you'll need other utilities for that. But it's free, and works very well. Currently running in 16MB of working set.

If you prefer the iTunes interface, there's an open source alternative called Songbird. I gave it a quick try, but after using it, I like the XMPlay interface, so I'm staying there!

BTW - I had a Mac Pro for a year (actually still do), and it was much higher "maintenance" than the PC. Plus I always felt restrained by it--mainly because I just didn't like many of Apple's design choices, particularly in Finder, and I found it much less flexible than Windows in that way. When I don't like something in Windows, I do a quick search, and find a way to change it, or a utility to replace one I don't like. And for example, I just couldn't find a good Finder replacement (and I tried them all--all three of them; on the PC there are a hundred alternatives!). (On the PC, Explorer has gotten much better, and has a really good file filtering feature, but I still don't like the propagating windows you end up with, so I often use XYPlorer as my main file manager, with a spattering of Explorer on the side.)
