I have a macbook pro and I have been trying to backup my files on an iomega network drive. While copying I get error - 1407 which I think is being caused by some files being locked. I tried to copy each file individually and the 'xmp' files do not get copied over. I get an error that the file is in use or I don't have sufficient permissions.
the file can be copied over from one directory to another on the same drive but doesn't let me do it to a network drive.

any help appreciated.

thanks,
Gaurawa

Use Disk Utility to repair permissions.

Even after repair permissions it fails.

from the terminal:
-rwxrwxrwx 1 gaurawa staff 9813435 Feb 8 17:53 IMG_0072.CR2
-rw-r--r--@ 1 gaurawa staff 7129 Feb 8 18:19 IMG_0072.xmp
-rwxrwxrwx 1 gaurawa staff 21706331 Feb 8 17:54 IMG_0073.CR2

'@' I expect to be symbolic link, but why are xmp files links ?

Hmm... if it's just a few files with that problem, then you could just change their permissions with this. If it's common to all XMP files or others, then it's likely an issue with how permissions are set or treated by your network drive.

How is this drive formatted? If it's FAT32, you should reformat it to Mac OS Extended (HFS+) using DiskUtility.
Also, is the drive full or close to full?

The @ sign means that the file has extended attributes.

I don't know why you can't back up the files, since you should only need read access on the file being backed up.

Do the files already exist on the drive being backed up to? If so, and they only have read access, this would be the problem. If they don't exist, it seems odd that you can back up the CR2 files but not the xmp files.

You could try changing the permissions of an xmp file, then try to back up that file. For example:

# chmod a+w IMG_0072.xmp

What is the result when you run `ls -l` on the networked drive?

The problem was with format. I had kept it at FAT32 to use it cross platform, but looks like it doesn't support all the extended attributes as HFS+ format. there are some limitations to the size of the attribute and where is it stored in the file system. A single file from HFS+ format was being stored as a combination of the file and a '.' file in FAT32. This did work for some files and not for all as possibly the limited size of the '.' file was not always enough.

I backed up the previous data on disk ( used as backup for a windows machine) and formatted the disk and everything seems to work fine.. except I can't use the Airport to backup.. so can't use time machine over network... I do need to buy a new disk but not willing to spend again, I will do with usb2 for now :)
