I would like to see a new forum added, called it 'Portfolio Discussion' (or whatever), in which the threads are made up of the comment threads for the photos in our portfolio.
As I am thinking of it, it would work like this:
-The thread would be the portfolio page as it is now.
-The name of the thread would be the portfolio page name, i.e. 'Photo name' by Photographer.
-A new thread is started automatically when a photo is added to a portfolio (n/a to challenge entries).
-Challenge entries only appear when they receive a comment after voting is done.
This has the benefit of focusing on the commenting going on in our portfolios, not just the challenge entries. When someone finds a photo in a portfolio and comments, it invites further commenting by others.
This does not detract or compete with the 'Individual Photograph Discussion' forum as that seems to focus more on works in progress (many hosted elsewhere), than on portfolio ready images.
What do you think?

I'm with you on this. I've often thought more emphasis should be given on this site for portfolio critique and review. I like the way you've described this as a new feature.
Hope they "Make it so". |

YES! That would kind of take care of another suggestion my husband had (can you tell I talk about DPC a lot?) and that was to have one defined challenge and one open challenge each week. While its great to have the stimulation the challenge provides, it is also sad sometimes that you can't "enter" the "great" photo you took this week, but doesn't meet the challenge.

I would have thought every person who takes part here agrees that we need a monthly open challenge at the very least. I'm mystified as to why this isn't in place. There was unanimous support for it in a forum thread, as I remember. |

I believe the reasons I heard recently in another thread were:
- Regular free study challenges would take people from the regular challenges; both in participation and voting. We have only so much time to devote to photography, splitting it up with even more options would seriously dilute all of them.
- It would provide additional strain on the site council, without significant gain toward the primary focus of the site -- learning photography by competing against each other in specific challenges.
- The free studies would loose their special appeal if they were more abundant.
- It would significantly reduce the uniqueness of DPChallenge; after all, there are a number of other sites that have regular challenges without the restriction of topics.
With the above in mind, I believe the schedule for free study challenges has been set at one every season, once every 3 months.
Personally, I think I agree. I am here to learn, and while free studies look like a lot of fun, they seem to be more a showcase of ability -- a way to demonstrate how much you have improved -- rather than a learning experience. Increase the freaquency of the demonstration, and it becomes much harder to see the improvement from the previous and the whole becomes less than it is.
But, I see you stopped in without voicing your opinion on my suggestion. Well? What do you think? (btw: this is a bump for the overnight/overseas crowd.)

Instead of creating a new thread, I will bump an old suggestion of mine and add another suggestion on a similar subject -- portfolios.
The new suggestion is to change the requirement of portfolio images to be hosted on DPC. Many have other means of hosting images, and indeed there are many that have the same images posted here and in other online locations. Why not change the portfolio to directly display any direct linkable images from another location on the internet, while still displaying it within a portfolio page that can be linked to, commented upon, chosen as a favorite and more. It would provide a means of keeping the general feel of the site on all images posted, creating a more universal feel for those of use looking at images posted to a forum for critique.
