Speaking of geology...

Here is a study of lines and curves captured at "The Wave" taken during the 3rd Annual Red Rock Destination GTG with Becky Tesch ( rjkstesch) and John Todd ( jrtodd). It was a great pleasure to meet them:

The Wave with rjkstesch and jrtodd

"The Wave" is only the best known of a surprisingly large number of incredible geologic sites in this small area. Other sites include "The Second Wave", Paw Hole, The Teepees, Lace Rock, White Pocket and Buckskin Gulch to mention just a few. There is much, much more to explore here than just The Wave.

Steve, that is an awesome collection of photos from the Red Rock area. The black and white images came out surprisingly well.

It about killed me that I couldn't make it this year.

Being selfish, I'm kinda glad you didn't make it... that allowed me to surreptitiously slip into your permit slot for Coyote Buttes which allowed me to take those pictures in the first place. LOL!!!

I am conducting a photo study of the Grand Staircase north of Coyote Buttes. I'll have to share some of those photos some time.

Well, you certainly made good use of the permit. I was especially hoping to make it to (selfishly) gain from some of your knowledge and experience of the area and outdoorsmanship in general.

I'll meet up with you somewhere eventually.

Yeah... if you need desert survival "outdoorsmenship" skills, I can give you some tips. ;) ;)

I'm sure additional meeting opportunities will present themselves... In fact, at some future time I suggest we photograph this really cool place in New Mexico:

Secrets of the West... Ah-shi-sle-pah

You may not have heard of it before. I hadn't until recently.

Some great snaps Steve, glad to be able to spend the time with you and Becky. As Robert stated the B&W images are stunning!

John... I can't remember if I mentioned this to you the last time we talked, but I know the easiest way to get up on Yellow Rock now. When I go back to Utah in August that is on my priority list. Yellow Rock and Round Valley Draw are the only major places along Cottonwood Road in the GSENM that I have not photographed at least once yet.

Also, major on my priority list is Smokey Mountain Road and Wolverine Bench Loop. On Smokey Mountain Road I will photograph the burning mountains and dinosaur digs. On the loop road I will climb Wolverine Bench and also explore existing and potential petrified wood sites. To my knowledge Wolverine Bench has only been photographed from the air. I think I might be the very first person ever to photograph it from the ground. I look forward to that.

Wolverine Bench from the air

Btw... those two roads traverse the most remote, least visited territory there is anywhere in the lower 48 US states. Now THOSE are places where you don't wanna get lost. LOL!!!!

When with Becky Tesch ( rjkstesch) and John Todd ( jrtodd) we also drove the ATVs to a place called Paw Hole in the South Coyote Butte Permit Area. Wildflowers were in season so I took some pictures of them as well as the geologic formations. Some of my images from that stop are found here:

South Coyote Butte - Paw Hole

Paw Hole is named for a small pond that serves as a natural watering source for animals living in the area. Ironically, I did not photograph the pond because of a fence that I thought was more distracting than enhancing to the scene.

I took a multi-image panorama there but have not prepared it for upload yet.

Note to BeeCee...

The BLM provides these recommendations and warnings when entering the GSENM. I take all of them seriously. The GSENM is a very harsh and unforgiving land:
1-Most roads require high clearance 4WD vehicles
2-Fill your gas tank before entering
3-Take enough food and water for TWO days longer than you plan to stay
4-Get a weather forecast before entering - flash floods and rain occur year round making roads impassible and washes and slot canyons extremely dangerous
5-Rescue could take up to several days should your vehicle become disabled
6-There is no cell phone service available in most of the GSENM
7-Take a signaling mirror
8-Let people know where you are going and when you will return

Added to that I recommend a shovel to dig out of places you get stuck and a good spare tire... I needed both of those items at separate times on my first trip. I carry a tent, blankets, camping gear and a 2 million candle power spotlight.
