Are layer masks legal under the advanced editing rules? Just thought I'd check before the flip. I don't want to submit if not.

Should be legal as you are not using a second image. Just don't make it too artsy so it doesn't look like a photo anymore (=Low scores)

Yes... again with the "maintaining photographic integrity" caveat. Basically if you use it to post-process or refine your shot, you're ok... if you get into moving/adding/duplicating major elements, such that you fundamentally change the shot, it's not.

If you are talking about turning a selection into a mask tied to an adjustment layer, through which you apply the adjustment to only part of the image, then yes, it should be legal in the Advanced Rules challenges, but not under the Basic Rules.
