| ....a really good scanner for photo slides? Maybe something that will also scan film negatives? My parents have thousands of slides and I would love to archive the slides for them. |

For really good?

There's nothing that comes close. Of course no one else makes high end scanners anymore either.
If those are too expensive (which for most people they are) I guess the question comes down to what's good enough? |

Gotta watch how you phrase those things, lest you get the money is no object suggestion. |

I got myself a Canon Canoscan 8800F a month back for just 140€'s @ebay.
it scans negatives and slides at up to 6x22cm (that's the size of the transmitted light unit) and comes with film holders for medium format, 35mm and one for framed slides. the included software (silverfast SE) will automatically invert negatives and gives pretty nice results colorwise. of course it's not the same as a nikon film scanner, but the results are ok for archives and small prints.
some examples, all scanned with the canoscan. |

| Guess I should have been a little more careful with my words. Commercial grade stuff, and prices, are out of the question. I was thinking something in the $200-$300 range. |

I saw this in a recent Popular Photography. Might help in your shopping:

| Thanks for all the replies. I guess I have a lot of research to do. Anybody use any of the units on BHphoto? |

I've been using the Plustek 7200i for a couple of years, and have had great success with it. I handles 35mm slides and negatives, and came with Silverfast software. The 7200 has slightly lower dynamic range than the Nikons, but I only paid around $350 through B&H, and we paid over $2000 for the Nikon that I use at work. There are new models of the Plustek available now, and I think they are improved over the 7200i. The 7500i appears to be the replacement for the 7200i.
Edited to correct the price of the Nikon.
