Hello all,
I have been trying to get into taking pictures but im confused about some stuff. I first need help setting the right white balance and also need help with getting the right exposure. Is there some type of formula to do it? If it helps I have a Olympus E410. |

When is white balance problematic for you? Outdoors, I generally use daylight WB, and inside I tend to usually use flourescent WB. Once in a while I need tungsten to overcome a strong yellow cast. Since I normally shoot in RAW, I actually set the white balance when I do my RAW conversion. The camera setting only sets a default that will be used if I don't change it later. I normally take the WB slider in my RAW converter and adjust it until the color cast of the scene looks right to me.
On the exposure question, I usually shoot in Aperture Priority mode. Using this mode, the camera chooses the shutter speed for proper exposure and allows me to tell it what aperture to use. Using this method, I have control of both aperture and shutter speed. If the camera is fooled by a difficult scene, I can use the exposure compensation control to take it a little lighter or darker. Again, since I shoot in RAW, I have more image data to work from and minor imperfections in exposure are easily adjusted for.
I'm not any expert with manual mode and I generally use it in conditions where the camera will be completely fooled and unable to set it properly on it's own. (Such as fireworks)

F8 and be there
Okay, that doesn't help.
Check the Tutorials under the "Learn" menu of this site. Focus mostly on technical camera stuff.
You need to learn Exposure (f-stops, shutter speeds, ISO speeds, and how they interact). Then you can learn about White Balance.
Good luck. It sounds like you jumped into the deap end of the pool, but it's more fun that way. |

This may be of some help. Free field guides from Photoanswers.co.uk
These are well written and well illustrated. The first one, titled "Using your digital SLR" will probably answer many of your questions about camera functions. |
