Hi all

in the past I have rented bowens 500w heads and a battery to use on location

As these are expensive to buy - would it be good to buy 2 canon 550 speed lights and use them on stands via sof boxes and brollies

or is this a rubbish idea - defo cheaper and easier to carry

would love your opinions

cheers

Tony

You might have problems with power. 550's only have around 2/3 the power of a Bowen Gemini. With softboxes and brollies you're going to be sucking up even more of that light which you already have less of. Strobist technique is very useful but controlling/overpowering the sun can be difficult (though it is possible). Also consider recycle time, which will be higher.

ETA: Strobist believes in careful application and technique more than blasting the hell out of the light, so with some thought you should be able to do it. As mentioned earlier, definitely check out his stuff if you're considering this route.
