I have a business trip coming up and will probably take an extra day in the Albuquerque area. Can anyone recommend locations for taking photos? I'll have a car and am not averse to a little driving to get to a scenic area.

I visited Albuquerque in March. Here is a writeup I did on theSandia mountains for Brent's Roving Photographer.
Then there is Old Town, which is the tourist-trap area where you can get some photos with a strong local flavor. Here are some of my own pics from the trip:

There are some other good locations there, but the two I mentioned are the ones I had time to visit. One place I wanted to see but didn't have time for was Petroglyph National Monument.
My stepdaughter lives there, so at some point I will make a return trip. A hike on the mountaintop sounds fun as well. There is a stone cabin at the top of one peak that I would love to get close to. |

I would definitely try to include the Sandia Peak tram, and the P N Monument. We visited both when I was there in Oct 06 for the balloon fest. You can see about 50 miles from the top of Sandia on a clear day, and the cable tram is one of the highest in the world. We had lunch one day at an outstanding place a couple of miles north of the balloon fest grounds. You may enjoy the hot air balloon museum as well, if you like that sort of thing.
ETA If you do go on the Sandia ride, you may want to shoot a shot before the gondola leaves the platform, and set a custom white balance for shooting through the tinted windows. Don't forget to change back when you get out of the gondola. I had a time trying to get the color right later on my shots taken through the windows during the gondola ride.
The P N Monument is a cool looking scenic area as well, with a lot of big boulders scattered about. A lot of butterflies were there in Oct when I was there.

The Sandia Peak tramway is up and running again after some cable refurbishment and will give you amazing views of the city from above. Old Town is always a treat and presents many photo ops. El Pinto restaurant has wonderful food as well as extraordinarily beautiful grounds. The Church Street Cafe in Old Town is another amazing restaurant. The building is ancient with very thick adobe walls, lace curtains and amazing light at certain times of the day. If you have a car, you can visit pueblos around Albuquerque. You might check them out first to see if they allow photography. Some, like Jemez, don't and WILL legally confiscate your equipment if you take pictures in areas where photography is prohibited. Fortunately, those areas are usually well marked. If you are respectful of the culture and the people, you usually find a lot of folks are very cooperative.
The Albuquerque Zoo is beautiful. The Bosque de Rio Grande is a great place to walk in the evening with gigantic cottonwood trees along the river - which is high right now because of the all the rain they have had lately. And because of the rain, there might be a desert flower bloom going on. The cholla's were blooming heavily when we were there last week.
If you have time and want a special treat, El Rancho de Las Golindrinas is a short way up I-25 (outside of Santa Fe). It is a 300 year old working ranch. Check it out here: //www.golondrinas.org/
You will wish you had more than a day :) |
