I took some time off from TX 100+ degrees weather, and temporarily replaced it with 50 deg Alaska weather. What a relief!

Here is one of the better (in my opinion) shots I took while up there:
The trip was an exercise in controlling the light reflecting off the snow and ice, while at the same time attempting to preserve the detail in darker forested areas. Also, a challenge was to get the photos of people in shadows with the strongly lit background using a tripod on the boat decks while officers were against spreading tripod legs... talking about trying to catch a photo op and coincide it with the ability to set up tripod op.

I want to go there.
I have had good results while boating by putting the camera on the tripod, legs extended but not spread out, then hold the whole thing a couple of inches off the deck. The length of the tripod legs puts the center of mass a long way from the camera, and helps a lot. It isolates the camera from the motion of the boat, and is usually more effective than trying to use a tripod the normal way while on a boat in motion.
Here's a sample shot at 1/30 sec, using that technique.

Looking at your pix, I see what you mean about the lighting being tough to work with.

Good shots of the eagles.

Alaska is on my list (once I'm done with Scotland). Some locations just deserve more than one visit. ;o)
