Hi all:
You have been so helpful in answering questions that I have one. I have just been approached by the Old Farmer's Almanac. They want to use one of my garden photos for next years annual issue. Any ideas how much I should ask? It would not be exclusive rights. The image has been approached in the past by a magazine and a seed company, but both deals fell through. So I need to keep it marketable, so no exclusive rights. Any one sell an image in the past to a magazine, and how much did you ask?

- 200 Euro for a shot found by & used by a calendar company, one-time printing rights.

- $250 CAN by a newspaper for a front page shot, printing rights.

- Catalogue cover for $500 CAN, printing rights.

- Magazine cover in trade for a full page ad inside, printing rights.

But the above were all covers/features. I suppose it'll depend on where your shot is used.

I find pricing to be a huge PITA, and I tend to just take what I'm offered. :-/

which is pretty much how it goes, unless it's obvious that they're raping you and the visibility just isn't worth it...

@junie: to keep deals from falling through, ask them what they typically pay. if it sounds reasonable take it. if it doesn't, tell them you were expecting a little more and see if they'll bite. if not, then it's up to you to decide if it's worth it. sometimes, it isn't.

good luck!

Thanks for the advice. I did e-mail asking them what their rate is. I did not supply any figures at all. It is probably one of those deals where they are trying to get a photo for free, going to a community and expecting folks to give it to them free of charge. I will most likely never hear from them again.
