And MAC is not immune. I just had to fix my brother in laws over the weekend. The more and more MAC becomes popular, more and more virues will be written for it. ;) |

This attitude amongst Mac users is a real problem. Sooner or later there is going to be an exploit for a Mac vulnerability, and because Mac users BELIEVE they are immune it will spread like wildfire!
I'm a Mac user BTW, but I would never make an assumption like that! |

keep the mac OS among a small circle of user base and you might be able to enjoy this for a few more years, me thinks. that is why i always suggest people to not use the mac, and go get a windows machine |

If you can build one, which isn't too dificult, in a PC Desktop you can get 3 times more for your money. So you pay for some antivirus software maybe $30 a year. Seek a friend or internet forums for help in putting one together.
For a Laptop the new macbooks are the best. Reliabile, fast, upto 8-Hrs on the battery
Many businesses involved with graphics or photography tend to use Macs. I have built a killer PC desktop system. I've recently edited a huge multi layer .tiff file 700MB 32-bit in CS4 and speed was acceptable. It did take about 45 seconds to save it.
I use a 23 inch Mac Cinema monitor with my PC. |

Free and well regarded antivirus applications: Antivir AVG
There are many other things besides running an antivirus program that can protect you. Some threats affects Macs as well. I believe the Mac is presently safer than the PC, but that is rapidly changing.
-Block javascript by using a script blocking extension in your browser
-Do not use a browser that supports activeX (Only Internet Explorer uses ActiveX)
-Use a custom HOSTS file that blocks known malware and adware sites.
-Do not install executables of unknown or questionable origin
-Periodically run an adware scanner as well. I ran a full scan of Spybot S&D on one of my XP boixes last night. It found nothing at all.

My evidence is anecdotal, but as a Mac user, I have never had a virus. I don't know a Mac-user that has had a virus. I have worked in Mac departments and used Macs since 1993. We all know that one of the reasons Macs are less often victims of viruses is because macs are less popular - but knowing that and saying that hasn't given my machine a virus yet. From what I hear, the open-source nature of OSX has something to do with it too. I'm not a real computer geek or anything, so I'm just speaking for people that maybe can add a hard drive or RAM on their own, install some software and that's it.
The reason I site "casual PC users" having viruses, is because they don't take extra steps to prevent them. Within the past year, a handful of PC users I know have discussed or actually switched to Mac because of various problems (including Viruses) with their Windows PC. The reasons behind problems with PC are varied, obviously. In forums people tend to want to jumt down someone's T1 line for making a comment like "pretty much immune" - so maybe i should have said something long and winded like I am now.
A special note: computer geeks should use PCs, Macs, and whatever they think they can customize to their liking. People who want to spend a little extra coin for their machine on the front-end and have a better chance having a smoothly running life at their desk may want to consider a Mac. I'm not an Apple proselytizer â€Â¦ i just prefer it over the other options.
