I have a canon 40D, and I am looking for a good normal prime for my Camera. I have a 50mm f/1.8, but with the cropped sensor in the 40D, 50mm just doesn't cut it for most applications.
So I looked at the Canon 28mm f/1.8 (28mm is normal on a crop sensor, am I right?), and am considering getting it, but I have also seen good reviews of the Sigma 28mm f/1.8. The Sigma is cheaper at B&H. I was wondering, are Sigmas high quality? I am a little scared to buy an off brand lens from a company who didn't make my camera.
I know Sigma has a good reputation, but are they about the same, Canon and Sigma? ...or better? ...or worse? |

No need to worry, Sigma makes great lenses. Though I'm not familiar with that particular lens, you need not worry about the "Cross Branding" but rather whether the lens is of the quality independent of the manufacturer name stamped on it. I have a Sigma 10-20 mounted on my Nikon and I love it. Hope that helps. |

Some third party lenses are high quality, others are not. Read up on reviews, as you've been doing.
Keep in mind third party lenses lose value a LOT more than Nikon or Canon, the depreciation is pretty big.
I've heard of occasional quality control issues with both Sigma and Tamron, but haven't personally witnessed it so I can't really say much more on that.
Some of the lenses are cheaper for a reason, some are a steal. I'm currently considering the Tamron 28-75 2.8, because it seems to be one of those lenses that is a great deal for the quality.
ETA: But it is perfectly safe. They won't damage your 40D or anything.

>I know Sigma has a good reputation, but are they about the same, Canon and Sigma? ...or better? ...or worse?
-You usually get better value for money with Sigma. Also, the build quality of cheap Sigma-s seems to be better than the build quality of cheap Canon lenses. (But Canon's "L" lenses are outstanding quality.) There are also a few Canon lenses that are a bargain - eg. the 50mm f/1.8, or the newer kit lens.
I think Sigma's EX labeled lenses are their pro lenses - the equivalent of Canon's "L". Are you looking at that version of the lens?
>So I looked at the Canon 28mm f/1.8 (28mm is normal on a crop sensor, am I right?)
-Yes, 50mm is usually considered the normal view angle - so that's around 28mm with the crop factor. |

Some thrid party lenses do not have as decent quality as the "name brands". However sometimes the "name brand" lenses are crap also, I find the best way to find out what you are getting into is to find multiple reviews online and get opinions of users of that lens as well to find which is the best direction to go for your application. Good Luck. |
