A friend will buy some P&S for her daughter to shoot birds.
I think she needs some long telephoto zoom.
What are the best options?
I dunno the names of those ¨almost SLR¨ cameras, but some of them have a good zoom range.
Can someone help, please?

I have a Canon Powershot S5 IS that I am pretty happy with. Even after having an SLR, the S5 still brings me some of my best shots. It is not the current model, however. The Powershot SX1 is it's replacement model.

The effective zoom range is close to what my 28-300mm lens on the SLR gives me.

Many call them "bridge cameras" "Superzooms" or "SLR-like". I prefer the term "Advanced compact".

Thanks guys!
I know the Canon S1iS (my brother has one), and i Have a Tz5. Both are really nice, and probably the upgrades you pointed too... I was actually thiking on the Canon, because the TZ zoom is nice (and on a small camera!!) but the TZ line dont have some manual controls that are important IMO. (in fact, i bought my DLSR because i became frustrated with the lack of Av and Tv on the TZ5)

Well... i was going to suggest the canon to my friend, and she came with the question about the Nikon coolpix p90. She is in europe right now and we are chatting while im posting here...

Do you know this camera? It has a huge zoom range (26-620), and i cannot find anything more ¨tele¨ to suggest. Maybe thats a good choice, considering the aimed usage (birds)

As for range... there's also the SP-590 Ultra-Zoom and Fuji S100FS. Both offer lots of control. The Olympus has significantly more range than the Fuji, but I figured I'd throw the Fuji in there since I was very happy with my S9100.

The Panasonic DMC Lumix FZ28 has very good reviews. Has all the manual controls too. Good lens. It's lens is longer than my Sigma 70-300mm. I still shoot with the FZ5, same far reach as the Sigma, and the FZ10 was the same, but slightly better IQ. But I have to say that bird photography is much better with a DSLR - so much faster, and you can see so much better through the viewfinder, which is crucial, although when I picked up the FZ28 in the store I found the viewfinder vastly improved over earlier FZ's. You should check out dpreview.com or some of the other review sites; dpreview has discussion forums based on camera makes, and there are some serious birders using the FZ series.
