Looking at the new calibration strip below each image I notice that I can't distinguish between the two whitest squares or between the two blackest squares but can distinguish clearly between all the others. Since this is equal at both ends of the scale can I assume that I am calibrated as well as I can be given the limitations of my monitor?

| Is that after putting the contrast as high as it will go and only adjusting the brightness? |

It's after doing the full Adobe monitor calibration thingy on both contrast, brightness, colour/ white balance etc.

I think it means your monitor gamut isn't wide enough, and that your initial assumption about being as calibrated as your hardware will allow is correct.
