As I walked through Montmartre in Paris, I noticed one of our local âHistoric Charactersâ taking a nap on a bench at Place Abbesses. It was very sobering for me as I reflected on my own life and how at any moment I and perhaps any of you reading this post could assume his condition. I walked up to him and very unassumingly attempted to capture the moment. He was oblivious to the click of the shutter. I fired away as if I were shooting a commissioned project. When done I turned around and as I was about to leave a women asked, âIs this for an Ad Campaign and is all of this being choreographed?â I smiled and said âIsnât this all being choreographed?â She just smiled and walked away as I headed west along Rue des Abbesses.

I've thought the same thing many times in my photo travels. I have a passion for connecting with "stories", and have met and photographed some people myself in the same place in life as this man. I'm always humbled when I spend time with them to realize how real these people are. I think sometimes we do tend to think of them as choreographed characters. But I always become keenly aware that in fact, they are real life human beings with histories, childhoods, families, memories, and pain (both physical and emotional). It makes me care for them even more. That's why I love those times when I'm able to really connect with them.
