This has probably been discussed before and as usual I am last to `discover` it - however you may well want to check out Google Trends. Basically it shows one the volume of specific search requests over the past 5 years or so. Whilst this can be fun just to see how certain events fluctuate the volume of searches - try typing in "Christmas" "Holidays Abroad" (or Vacations for you crazy yanks) and you can see each year the pattern is very similar. Try putting in something that wouldn`t have a regular pattern like "Barack Obama" and you will see it peaks at specific points in time which in this example is a general build up towards the election then the Inauguration. Another good example is "Recession". Again notice the build up from Mid 2007..

However, I have used it to check the best way of advertising my Google Adwords campaign - using a more localised search (United Kingdom) I checked the search phrase "Wedding Photographers" and as you can see from the results, my best time to start spending more on my Adword Campaign would be be July/August time, then throttling back towards the end of the year then with a push at start of the year..

Now why this isnt an exact science - it could certainly help me in planning my yearly online advertising budget..

Hope it helps some of you too.

Subnote - lol, just typed in PORN and it just goes to show - there is never a bad time for porn. In fact, people seem to get busier around Christmas time... well, it does only come once a year..
