Do it anyway. Unless you have the newest model (with a 1066Ghz bus), it would cost you a whopping $43, and you'll get a significant boost when running multiple apps like that. |

Model Name: iMac
Model Identifier: iMac8,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
Processor Speed: 3.06 GHz
Number Of Processors: 1
Total Number Of Cores:2
L2 Cache: 6 MB
Memory: 2 GB
Bus Speed: 1.07 GHz
You think with this I would still see much of a benefit? I have only had the machine (first Mac) for a couple months. Don't mind upgrading at all.

Ah, that would be a little more. Yes, you'll notice it if you have multiple large apps open. |

Anyone know why Apple has the same memory for 1200.00? |

$200 (that's 8GB), and because they can. ;-) |

Apple uses predominantly Hynix, occasionally Samsung or Micron brands. In older machines you might also find IBM modules. It is tested RAM with a life-time guarantee. Despite this the price is absurd, IMO.
I have never bought Apple RAM, except for what was hard-soldered in. For upgrades, I have successfully used Kingston and Crucial Brands, so far. |

Oops! My mistake. Just shows that I was in shock and not thinking clearly when I saw the prices. But still, that is more than twice the cost. I checked the specs and sure enough the memory Shannon linked to meets or exceeds Apple parameters. I guess by the 15th of July I will have a 4 gig machine then. So Shannon are you 'backing' this RAM? Do you use it yourself? I have never heard of the company. Will do a search on them pretty close to after this post. Thanks for the link.
I really did not pay too much attention to the memory issue as it is my first Mac and also since I have not had any issues thus far. I have been so overwhelmed at the performance of this machine over my previous Windows machine that upgrading RAM was never really a consideration. But if it can be even better for that price...I am all for it.

They've been my source for 15+ years & literally dozens of computers. Never a problem. |

I'd have to second the recommendation for OWC RAM as well as their hard disk drives.
I have my clients install a $10 tool called Macaroni which repairs permissions once a week, eliminates the localized language files once a month (Farsi and Swahili, anyone?) which take up around 300,000 files worth of space on a newly shipped/factory Mac. And cleans the daily/weekly/monthly log files.
Then you need something for hard drive maintenance, Disk Warrior is the easiest to run, booting from the DVD a couple times a year. The student/home version of Office 08 is $149.
Be careful if you need to cross-license your Adobe products, I have heard HORROR stories lately about their offshore support messing that up and charging credit cards improperly.

Well, that was a nice little experiment. However, the outcome was total failure. I ordered from the above mentioned vendor and received the RAM this morning. Came home, went to install, and it did not work. Well, more correctly, it did not fit into the system. I saw this as soon as I pulled out the existing RAM. The notches were in different places although both on the left (which was one of the questions asked when I ordered it and repeated in the directions that the notch must be on the left). They were both on the left, just not in the same places so the module would not install - I tried. Oh well.

Did you try iFixit.com? I have used them and the memory always is right. Just a thought. |

No, I used the vendor Shannon recommended above. I even sent them the printout of my system configuration after I spoke to them the first time. They just sent the wrong memory. I will return it and move on. Not a big deal. |

Eeep! Looks like I sent you the wrong link, and I apologize (though I'm surprised OWC would get it wrong if you sent your system configuration). There are several different 3.06GHz iMac models, and yours was not the one I thought it was. If OWC hasn't already corrected the order, this should be the correct memory.
Ah, I see what it was... I saw the 1066MHz bus and figured 1066MHz memory. Sorry about that! :-(

Not a problem. I looked at the specs and saw it was DDR3 and mine is DDR2. I ordered the DDR2 and that is what they charged me for. They just sent the DDR3. I already called them today and they apologized and will exchange it no problem. In fact, they said they are sending it right away - not even waiting for the memory to be returned but did give me the RA to return it.
