So I am pretty new to printing photos, and I have done some work in photoshop on this photo but when I print this out either using the printer color or CS4 color, most of the pictures turns black, but I know there are some good colors and I just want to print the mood of the picture which is clearly not black, anyone know what i need to do to lighten this up without ruining the picture mood> //c-s-photography.smugmug.com or its the sunset one in my 'Portfolio

What profiles are you using and what colour management options are you using?

Remember to turn ICM off in the printer driver when you have set colour to be managed by photoshop.

Tick the box next to the word OFF. That will turn it off.

Is your monitor calibrated? That can make all the difference.

No I havent had that done, I guess I didnt think that would make that much of a difference, I mean its a really big difference going from adobe 1998 to the epson vivid selection with out a tool is there a way to come close to calibration

not really. I tried calibrating my monitor with software but it just doesn't work.

Buy a hardware screen calibrator, even a cheap one and you will never go back.

You need to set the printer profile to the one that matches the paper and ink being used.

In the Colour Management section of photoshop the following should be set:

Colour managed by photoshop
Source profile will show the current profile of the image whatever it is
Printer profile should be set to the profile which matches the paper and ink.

When you print, photoshop will convert the colour numbers represented in the source profile to those in the printer profile.

Do you have a screen shot of the colour management window in PS?

That looks right as long as the paper being used is what the profile is for.

Remember to tick the box for no colour management in the print driver. That's the only thing that was missing in the previous screen shot you provided.
