I've read the alternative voting thread, and I think I have a different take on it. Forgive me if this has been stated already, but at some point I started skimming.
The major issue seems to be: Photographers wanting more relevant/in-depth comments on their work.
Couldn't the simple fix work something like the current voting threshold?
You need to vote on 20% of the entries to have your votes count. Why not just add a similar requirement to leaving comments? Let's say everyone needs to leave a fixed number like 5 or a floating amount like 2% to make their votes count.
Make the "compulsory comments" randomly assigned - the way the Critique Club works. That way the server can determine which photos need comments and all entries will get a fair share of quality (potentially) comments.
Nothing about this would stop anyone from leaving additional comments.
Additionally, there could even be a reverse vote on the compulsory comments, instead of just a helpful/not helpful check box, there could be a numerical scale just like the photos. That way people might be tempted to give longer more thoughtful comments.
What do you think? |

That's interesting, but it's not just more comments people are after. I think you will just see a lot of "nice photo!" if you do this.
The alternative proposal is trying to give people an optional mechanism with which they can easily explain their votes. And even if the statistics are not presented individually (one possibility is to only show the summary statistics on all the dimensions), you can see more information like (for example):
On meeting the challenge, my average score was 3 out of 10
On technical, my average score was 9 out of 10
On aesthetics, my average score was 9 out of 10
etc.
So then I am not surprised that my average score was 4. On the average, people really liked this photo, thought it was done competently, but didn't see it as meeting the challenge.
If implemented on an individual vote display, the voting proposal would allow someone to quickly tell you they voted a 4 because they felt it didn't meet the challenge, or was poor technically, etc. Comments may also be easily added to any and all of the voting dimensions.
Of course, constructive free form comments are still allowed and encouraged.

That's the idea behind rating the comments - to try to diminish "nice photo!" comments from the compulsory comments.
I like the breakdown and it's nice to know what general aspects of your photo a voter liked or didn't like. But, without some level of commentary associated with those additional numbers I think the increased granularity of the vote just moves the question of "what did the voter like/dislike" out without actually answering it.

I do agree that it would be nice to rate comments! I think that might encourage people to write more, and to analyze more! |

These are all great idea, the only problem is that we are dealing with MASSIVE amounts of shots anymore. It's daunting as it is without adding all the extra (cool really, but not practical) stuff.
