Hey All. I posted a thread a while back on winning 3rd Place in State Competition. I want to take the image to the buildings and possibly the city and try to sell some prints of it. Does anyone have advice on who to start with? General Manager, Marketing Manager? I plan on bringing in my 16 by 20 of it with the ribbons on it. I have gone to places on the web with pics of these buildings and I feel mine at least holds up to the best of them. Any advice on who to talk to and what to do will be greatly appreciated.

Do you have a property release signed by the owners of this building? If not, commercial exploitation of the image could well be limited.

So I guess that would be the first step. Talk to the owners?

you do not need a model release to sell a skyline as a work of art, especially if you are selling them as one-offs. you could run into problems if you were to try to mass-market them, putting them on postcards, coffee mugs, etc, and selling them at the airport.

talk to the office managers of the tennants and ask to speak with the person responsible for their decorating decisions.

good luck!

edited for clarity i only looked at the thumbnail, didn't realize it wasn't just a skyline, but a single complex.

In that case, you probably don't need a release to sell individual prints (especially if you don't name the buildings in the title), but you probably would to use it as a stock image or for mass reproduction such as calendars, cards, or coffee cups ...

The owners might even want to license it for their own publicity. You should be able to find out the actual owners from your county clerk (or wherever deeds are registered) or tax assessor's office. I don't think the tenants need to be a party to the matter -- there's nothing in the photo which identifies any particular business.

Here is a response email got back from the developer after i emailed them to see if they would be interested in using the image.

Greetings, Andrew--

Congratulations for being recognized in this year's AZPPA competition and thank you for choosing the Condominium at Tempe Town Lakeside as your subject.

Although the building is in the process of being sold and it will likely be owned and operated by a new investor within the next six weeks, I would be interested in knowing if this image is available, and what fees might be required, for using it in promotional materials and on the SunCor website.

I'm looking forward to your response.

I am going to reply today, any advice? I am encouraged because I sent the email on Saturday evening and the response came on Monday at about 9AM. The first business hour after I sent the email.

that might be a little too open-ended to try to give him fixed prices. image usage depends on how it is going to be used, how much, and for how long. for example, a 1/2 page image in a brochure with a run of 10,000 or less should get you about $500 (check it out with this stock usage calculator). you can always start with asking what they normally pay to use images like this.

this is way cool! hope it all works out for you. at least, i hope you sell a buncha prints ;-)
