I've read the manual front to back, but I can't figure out how to disable the focus by pressing the shutter button half way down. I would rather have it be able to focus solely by the button in the back (the one with the zoom out button). My first generation 5D was able to do this, but I'm stumped with the Mark 2. Thanks in advance!

If its like the 1DMKIII its in the custom functions IV Operation/Others and then Shutter Button/AF-ON button. Then if you want it moved to the * button you need to use the next custom function to swap the AF-ON/AE lock button switch.

It took me a few tries to get it right. They made some changes to the menu on the 5D2.

Cool, that makes it so I can focus with the back button, but then how do I disable to shutter-half way focus? I don't want the shutter button to have any part in focusing...

Page 182 in your manual.

CFn IV-1 - you want 3 i think, or perhaps 2. Try them both and see what it does.
CFN IV-2 will swap the * and AF-On buttons - the 30D, 5D and earlier bodies didn't have an AF-On button so the * was used and some, like me, got used to that.

Thanks!
I have been trying to figure this out since I bought my camera. I tried to do the same as you said from the manual but somehow you were able to explain it so I could understand it and make it work. Silly really but much appreciated.
