Hey everyone, i recently bought Lightroom and am now trying to figure out how it works. As of now, its bugging the crap out of me. So here are a few questions from the noobie

Why cant i just delete a folder whenever i want to?
Why doesnt the undo button doesnt do anything?
How come my editing isnt saved when i exit Lightroom?
How do i change the irritating way Lightroom saves files?(it creates a year file, then a date file, then the photos, all within the file i originally wanted to save it. major unhelpful pain in the ass)

and any extra tips for managing Lightroom would be greatly appriciated

Sheesh girl, you post right before rollover and folks are gonna be busy getting their last minute entries in, then checking out the results!
Hrmph... impatient teens... MY generation was never like that...... ;)

Now, having said that, I'm sorry to add that I don't use Lightroom so can't help you at all.
(don't throw things at me, please!)

Well most of DPC is asleep at this time of day....

- You can
- It does
- You need to export the files, LR is not editing the orig files... It's keeping track of what you do and when you export a file to a JPG or whatever it burns those changes to you output files.
- It's actually very helpful but you can change the way the files are organised.
- Try Lightroom Killer Tips or the Official Help yourself cause we don't forums

I use lightroom only for importing and keywording. I think lightroom for photographers is just another thing they want you to keep paying for. They hold back improvements and give people just enough to get them thinking they have to have it. I'm sure someone will give a good reason to use it now but just ask yourself if thats really the best way for you to work. lightroom=redundant

i bought it so i could actually edit and use my RAW files, since Photoshop cant view them unless i convert to digital negative or use ExifPro. so as long as i dont destroy it before i learn how to use it im sure i will be pleased with the purchase

how do i cut and paste from one folder to another?
06/17/2009 03:53:10 AM · #10
To move images to another folder. Open the folder pane on the left and drag and drop the images to the folder you want.

If you learn best by viewing I can recommend the Lynda courses for Lightroom. It give you a real handle on the concept. I really like Lightroom as it means these days I can do much of my editing with out even opening Photoshop.

i have been dragging and dropping, but that just copies the photos, i still have to go through later and delete them from the original folder. and ill check out the Lynda courses, thanks:)

Ahh damn name changes LOL I was about to mention impatient Noobies only to find she's an old hand, well a young hand that's been around - nope that don't sound right LOL.... I'm sure you get the message heh

As for LR I only have an old 1.3 copy, can't say I do that much with it really though, tend to use it more for WB correction, and slight tweaks to blacks and exposure more than anything else simply because I find these tweaks are more effective in LR than in photoshop and ofc they are made prior to exporting from the RAW file.

Heya! Well, I would have replied earlier, but I didn't see your thread until just now. ;)

Some "interesting" ideas/opinions in this thread so far... Here are a couple of videos I'd recommend you check out which I think will get you on the right track.

Adobe LR Basics - Overview of Importing - follow this video series through subsequent episodes -- the site navigation is a little cumbersome, but the videos are great
Adobe TV LR video tutorials - Great starter info and workflow examples.
Lightroom Killer Tips videos - There are some intermediate to advanced topics here -- but if you sift through, you'll find a lot of core/basics also.

There are some subtleties to the points you're asking about which can get a little wordy/verbose to try to fully explain, dependning on precisely what you want or expect LR to do. I'll be available by phone tomorrow if you want someone to go over some of it a little more real-time with you -- feel free to PM me. Otherwise, check out those video links and feel free to ask more questions.

In general, there's a gentle learning curve to moving into an LR workflow, and it can be a little challenging to jump right in by yourself. I'm starting an LR user group to address things just like this for local photographers and teach folks how to use LR, so I'd be happy to use you an a guinea-pig to bounce some teaching ideas off of.

Once you understand how LR can be used in your workflow, you'll be hooked.

well crap, turns out you cant export whole files unless you go through and select every single file. how irritating, especially since lightroom jsut crashed and i didnt have everything exported. grawr

You need to select all the photos that you want to be exported and then select 'export'. You should then get a progress bar kind of thing going on in the upper left corner.

I find LR2 to be really handy for organizing actually. I have had not trouble organizing or exporting originals or whole files. I dont like how I have to "register" the plugins like facebook and whatnot, but I just export some low res Jpgs into a folder and then import into whatever I want. After that I delete the low res pics.

If you need to quickly move things around/reorganize you can do that in Windows/MAC then open LR and tell lightroom where the files have been moved. LR only keeps track of the catalogue. There are no physical folders there.

LR 2 is much better than LR 1 in the organizational and other departments. The LR help is good.

A book I would recommend if you want more detail is The ADOBE PHOTOSHOP LIGHTROOM 2 Book by Martin Evening.

Though the book you choose depends on your learning style. There are Kelby books on LR as well.
