Obviously I know what the object is. But what does it mean in photography terms?

I think it means putting a photo in a challenge that does not quite fit, but maybe lind of does. As in you use a shoe horn to put those shoes on that just does not quite fit.

In DPChallenge terms it means a photo that has, at best, only a tenuous link to the challenge topic. To be a true shoe horn the photo would not be taken with the challenge in mind, but entered anyway, often with a title that provides the link. Not analogous to an Out of the Box (OOB) entry, although the two are often confused.

I'll just add that, IMO, a shoehorned entry is better than a total DNMC.

... and that one person's "shoehorn" is often another person's "creative interpretation" of the topic.

Sometimes it literally IS a shoehorn.

Have we done an actual shoehorn challenge?

Nope. But I don't think it would be as much fun as shoehorning my shoehorn into regular challenges.
