I have a family portrait session to do, and I was wondering what the best aperture setting is to have all 3 of them in focus, but still have a bit of blur in the background....

Any suggestions?

That is a very difficult question to answer without knowing several key parts of the photo.

1. What lens are you going to use?

2. How will they be posed?

3. From what distance will they be photographed?

4. How far from the background will they be?

ditto, what matto said.

The depth of field for each aperture changes depending on what focal length you are using and how far your subjects are away from the camera. We need to know what lens you are using and how they are going to be seated.
