Anyone gone and taken their camera? I've got a durable, waterproof bag for food and the like, but would my camera be safe while rafting (class V rapids)? Heading out for a 2-day raft down the New River in West Virginia (at least I think that's where we are headed), and would like to take my camera along.
Have never been rafting, so don't fully know what to expect.

I've been rafting a few times out in Colorado. With class V rapids, think "being dunked completely underwater" for the level of wetness to expect -- much more than just being splashed. There's a chance of you/your gear getting tossed out of the raft at some point, too.
Most places will have a couple of drybags that you can put your gear in, along with everyone elses gear. These are made out of very heavy plastic and are thoroughly sealed - in my experience they do keep things dry. The downside is that usually you can only get your stuff when the raft stops for lunch or whatever. They keep the bags sealed and packed in the raft while underway - and your camera may be on the bottom of the pile. Also, the bag won't protect the camera from being bumped around, so bring your own padding.
Personally, I'd leave the digital at home and get one of those waterproof disposables to take along. |

The only safe way to take your camera along would be to get yourself a waterproof case for your camera. I beleive that Pelican makes a case that would keep it dry. Unless you are looking to take pictures while rafting then you would need an underwater case made by Ikelite. |

Thanks all. I figured the type of rapids we'll be hitting would prevent any picture taking on the go.
And since I'd probably only have access during breaks and the overnight camp, I'll probably leave my camera in the cabin or car. The waterproof disposables sound like a good idea...perhaps with a strap around my wrist so I can try and take shots when I shouldn't....
Thanks again. |

your guide should have a "dry-bag" that goes with you guys on the raft.
