After doing a lot of research I've finally bought a new tripod, to replace my trusty old cheapo Velbon one (that funnily enough came free with the D40!)

I bought a Manfrotto 055XPROB with the 808RC4 head. All I can say is WOW!

It's extremely stable, easy to use, not too heavy but with just enough weight to help in high winds. It should support pretty much any body and lens I wish to buy in the future. It's very well made and infinitely adjustable, plus the centre column can go horizontal and the legs can splay right out meaning the camera can go right down to ground level.

The best bit is that at full height it's at exactly the right height for me without having to bend down or extend the centre column at all, which is perfect! And to top it all off my local Henry's did a great deal on the price which I couldn't beat on the web either, nice one Henry's!

Soooo happy...

One thing I was wondering, do people buy cases for their tripods? It's too big and heavy to have it permanently strapped to my camera bag, is a case worth it? I think they are about $50.

I have the same tripod and the 804RC2 head (a bit smaller and lighter than the 808RC4) and it's great. I bought it after my cheap Giottos broke. The Manfrotto handles the heavy wind we get down here much better. I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

I had myself a strap to make carrying it easier, the official Manfrotto bags and straps were too expensive for me.

You know those folding beach chairs, the ones with the fabric arms and seats? They come in drawstring bags, and they are cheap? The bag from one of those is what I use for my 'pod, LOL...
