When all of a sudden did it become chic to be southern. I remember almost once a week I hear that the south is getting another monument tore down and another person is getting "laid off" for sporting a rebel flag.

When did it become cool to be southern - I must have been sleeping?

I don't know if it is cool to be Southern. I just know I am what I am. I believe we should all be proud of our heritage whatever it may be. What monuments are getting torn down in the South? I also have never heard of anyone getting laid off or fired for wearing the rebel flag. Sent home to change maybe but not fired. Give me some actual facts not hearsay. Even if they were true, why do you think that is the norm? We are just as educated and cultured as anyone else in our great country.

Sure, search any news site, like CNN:

//www.cnn.com/2001/ALLPOLITICS/04/17/mississippi.flag/index.html

I don't want to challenge anyone's heritage. Only asking why so many people are so behind southern cooking and against the southern ideas?

Can you tell me where you are trying to take this? We were talking about food and prejudice and getting along great. Southern ideas can be so many different things. If I asked someone about Norhern ideas, they wouldn't know what I was talking about either. If you think that Southern Ideas means standing up for slavery, racial oppression, and hatred for the rest of the country then it's like I said, "Why would you think that is the norm?" I can still be proud of my heritage without condoning what my ancestors did.

I have to get back to work. Have fun and ya'll take some of this food home with you. I don't want to have to feed it to the dogs.

my family has roots in tennesse and missouri. slavery and hatred are worldwide ideas, not just southern. many southerners were also against that way of thinking.

I sincerely hope that was an attempt to parody iban's comments, and nothing more.

Thanks for your thoughtful insight, mci. I can see this thread is going nowhere, so let's just call it a day.
