ok i'm really getting pissed at the direction dpc is taking on about.
are we being drilled to become stock photographers/photo editors here?
ten out the last 14 open challenges ran under advanced editing.
motivational poster, stock photo:fitness/whatever, automobile ad, green*, glamour and now "promote your zoo"?!? these are challenge themes obviously directed towards commercial photography, but is this really what the majority of people wants to be shooting for? or is it rather that the majority has become stock photo oriented because of the spread of commercial challenge themes on dpc (and on the web in general, stock sites etc.)?
I'm not complaining about commercial themes in general, it's ok to have one of those once in a while, but i'm getting concerned as to how that course influences the audience here on dpc (aside from the fact that i don't feel inspired to shoot for any of the challenge themes lately). there are great challenge suggestions like the Masters of Photography Series so why not taking a step "backwards" to acquiring the basics of photography (light, composition, focus, etc.) before taking the plundge into commercial photography (resp. having both run parallel)...
photography is a form of art (and a craft) after all isn't it?

Discuss. (and i don't wanna hear any "so what" comments, please! lol)

I'm not that thrilled about it either. I think adding text is fine every now and then, but not 3 challenges in a row. Same with advanced editing, I think it should be reserved for member challenges only. Not because it's a bonus for members but because I believe basic editing has a strong place in challenges. I rarely do advanced editing (I just don't know how), but it's not just because I don't like it or do it that I don't want to see it. I think challenges should encourage people to enter and I think these "ads" and advanced editing challenges may discourage a lot of people from entering.

I think it's just a temporary swing toward some more narrowly focused topics. At other times, the topic is so broad that it's nearly a freestudy. Light for instance. Pretty much anything fits that topic.

I'd love to see the 'Master's of Photography' series as well. I might not shoot for it, but the images produced would be excellent.

IMO the type added feature is cool, but 3 in a row is a bit much.

My feelings as well. Especially since it's clear from the entries that working with fonts is another skill requiring its own expertise.

I just use it as a portfolio for my snapshots, what's the big deal? :-)

Right, not everyone is a graphic designer!
